iPOOL Research Projects
Active in the world of research, iPOOL Srl has participated or is participating in the following national and international research projects

STRADAVISION - Technological Innovation for Road Maintenance through
Cameras and AI
The project involves the development of an innovative service for the
monitoring of road surfaces and signs, combining specialized sensors, high-definition and thermographic cameras with artificial intelligence models. The goal is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the conditions of the road network, detecting cracks, potholes, deterioration of the asphalt and anomalies in horizontal and vertical signs.
Thanks to the data acquisition on instrumented vehicles, the system will offer fast, non-invasive and low-cost monitoring, providing detailed information on road conditions and signs. This solution will support maintenance planning activities, improving safety and optimizing infrastructure management.
The project starts from TRL 3 for the part relating to signage and TRL 5 for the part relating to road surface analysis, with the aim of reaching an overall TRL 7. The implementation involves iPOOL, responsible for integration and AI, inTouch, in charge of the management software, and iDNA, dedicated to the web platform for the use of the results.
The proposal is in line with European road safety policies and also focuses on economic and environmental sustainability, since adequate maintenance allows for the reduction of fuel consumption and emissions, extending the useful life of infrastructures and ensuring higher performance over time.
PASSAGE - innovative process for the use of Artificial Intelligence in the assessment of the state of road pavements
The project uses aggregated sound pressure data, collected
inside the tire, and real-time visual monitoring to assess the state of degradation of the road network. This data, acquired by low-cost instruments installed on board a vehicle and reprocessed using Artificial Intelligence techniques, is geolocalized and provided to management bodies or companies to improve road maintenance and safety. In the future, the system can also be installed on private vehicles, allowing a broad collection of useful information for active safety, driving comfort and future autonomous driving applications.

NOMADIA - Innovative techniques for assessing the state of wear of road surfaces with artificial intelligence
Project funded by the Call for industrial research and experimental development projects CALL RI&SS ARTES 4.0 N.5 – 2023, relating to the plan for the recovery and resilience of Italy (PNRR), Mission 4 “Education and research” – Component 2 “From research to business” of the Plan, Investment 2.3 “Strengthening and thematic and territorial extension of technology transfer centers for industry segments”, under the responsibility of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy.
The aim of the project is to develop an automatic recognition system for road surface deterioration through artificial intelligence techniques supported by specific sensors inside the tire that allow complete and frequent monitoring of the network.
The sensors used consist of MEMS microphones for measuring the sound level inside a tire, video cameras for surveying the pavement and the use of AI methods for analyzing the acoustic and visual data collected for the categorization of the defects.
PhD ITalents to increase its research and development sector in the field of low noise flooring in 2017.
Call funded by the Ministry of Education, University and Research, CRUI Foundation for Italian Universities and Confindustria.
The project includes co-financing for the permanent hiring of a research doctor for the study and evaluation of rolling noise with particular reference to low-noise pavements.

PhD Food and Sustainable Development FAI Lab – Italian Agricultural Supply Chain
Call for proposals funded by Coldiretti (National Confederation of Direct Farmers), CRUI Foundation (Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities), MIUR (Ministry of Education, University and Research).
The project provides co-financing for the permanent hiring of a PhD for the study and evaluation of noise and vibrations in agricultural companies.
LIFE E-VIA - Electric Vehicle noIse control by Assessment and optimization of tyre/road interaction LIFE18 ENV/IT/000201
Life 2018 Call funded by the European Commission
The project involves the development of low-emission tyres for electric vehicles, with laboratory and field tests on pavements optimised for these vehicles and determination of their acoustic parameters to be used in the CNOSSOS reference model at European level for the estimation of noise levels at receptors.

POR FSE 2014-2020 Vale: “AdVanced Assessment and smart noise monitoring for road pavements’ sustainabiLity and safety”
National project co-financed by the Tuscany Region
The project provided funding for two research grants for physics PhDs to develop a mobile laboratory capable of performing multiple measurements for the acoustic characterization of a pavement and georeferencing the results.
Por Creo Fesr 2014-2020

POR FESR 2014-2020 - Surf-ACE, SURFace Analysis for Classification and Evaluation
The founding idea of the SurfaceACE project is based on the use of aggregated data for real-time monitoring of the state of the road network, using a specialized sensor placed inside the wheel of one or more vehicles.
The data will be acquired through on-board instrumentation and sent to the cloud where they will be aggregated, processed to verify the condition of the road surface and redistributed, with particular interest towards management bodies or companies that manage the infrastructure.
